Found this prose title "The Meaning of Rescue" online. Thought it was interesting.
Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage, lest I forget.
There's so much to carry, so much to regret.
Yes, there it is, right on the top,
Let's unpack loneliness, heartache and loss.
And there by my feeder hides fear and shame.
As I look on these things I tried hard to leave,
I still have to unpack my baggage called pain.
I loved them, the others, the one's who left me,
But I wasn't good enough, for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage, or help me unpack?
Will you look at my things and take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage, to never repack?
I pray that you do, I'm so tired you see,
but I do come with baggage, will you still want me?

Baggage is something rescue horses sure do have. I think a lot of people rescue horses when they are too weak to fight or show their true colors. Once nursed back to physcial health the problems seem to start surfacing. Nothing wrong with rescuing a horse. I just think people need to go into it with a sense of reality and not rosy colored glasses.

How sad :-( Of course a rescued horse will come with baggage, just like a human who has been abused or neglected. But with enough love and patience, a rescued horse can often become a loving wonderful family member :-)

I've had three rescued off the track thoroughbreds. All had that blank look in their eyes when you pet them or offered a treat....I must say, didn't take long for them to figure out kindness and patience. I loved them all and all turned out to be really nice horses. We did go through growing pains (and some pain of me hitting the ground) but they were young also and young horses do that! Just need to get them vetted b4 taking one in if you plan on a show riding partner!!

We are currently looking into getting a 3 year old make horse from the local shelter. It is a great looking horse, the owner could no longer afford to take care of it. If there were any more horses that were available, we would consider taking on one more.
