I have had my current horse for years. He is elderly and semi retired. He will be with me forever. I owe it to him.

I've been continuing to grow in my riding by riding school horses.

I'm debating about getting a second horse, one I can ride regularly and do higher level stuff with. It will be tight, but I *can* afford two horses. For some reason, however, I feel as though I might be insulting my current horse by fully retiring him and making him a pasture pet.

Any thoughts?

I doubt he'd be insulted if you still groomed him and paid attention to him. He would probably appreciate the break....if you like trail riding and have access to them, just do that with him....he probably has put many years in for you so some light easy riding might just be the answer!!

I would just take it easy on him. He is an older horse and does not want to be bothered anymore. Just let him graze and run around with the other horses. He does not want to ride anymore.
